Gps stands for the Global Positioning System, it is a Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) set up by the United States Department of Defence. It is the only fully functional GNSS in the world at the moment. It utilizes a constellation of between 24 and 32 Medium Earth Orbit satellites that transmit precise microwave signals, which enable GPS receivers to determine their current location, the time, and their velocity.
When we say Gps, we may refer to the above-said system, but more often we mean a Gps device that can locate and navigate when we drive by acquiring our current coordinates sent by the satellites. A Gps device consists of three main parts: a cpu, a receiver and a antenna. When the Gps receiver receives the signal from the satellites (usually from 3 to 4 satellites), the cpu will calculate them and get our coordinates. If you have the correct map, it will show your place on the map.
